West Fork Fire Update

Fire Name: West Fork Fire
Location: in the South Madison’s just North of the Beaver Creek FS cabin, Hebgen Ranger District, Custer Gallatin National Forest
Start Date: 8/19/2025
Size: 200 acres
Containment: 0%
Resources: 12 smoke jumpers, 4 rappelers, 3 Engines, Type 3 IC, Big Sky Fire Department – one Type-5 engine and fuels crew. More resources have been ordered.
Current Activity:
This is an emerging incident. The fire does not currently pose a threat to Big Sky. Please stay away from aviation working at Hebgen Lake. Aviation aircraft may be dipping out of Hebgen Lake. DO NOT operate drones in the fire area or the Hebgen Lake area, this will cause all firefighting aircraft to be grounded immediately. There is a temporary Flight Restriction in place in the fire area.
Red Flag Warning: Gallatin County is currently under a Red Flag Warning. The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, is in effect until 10 PM MDT today. The warning indicates critical fire weather conditions due to low humidity, high temperatures, and gusty winds, which can lead to rapid fire growth and new fire starts.
The Custer Gallatin National Forest will be issuing a closure later today for trails and roads within the fire area. In light of the Red Flag Warning and the presence of the wildfire, the public is advised to stay away from the Taylor Fork and Beaver Creek areas until further notice. Additionally, residents are urged to sign up for the Gallatin County Emergency Management’s Community Notification System to receive updates regarding their areas. No evacuations ordered at this point in time. Gallatin County Sheriff’s Deputies have been informing campers at the campgrounds about the fire for awareness.
Big Sky Fire department is helping with efforts and visiting property owners on fuels mitigation work.
Closures
Although no official Forest Service closures are in place at this time, it is strongly encouraged to avoid the area, including: Lightning Trail No. 200 and Sentinel Trail No. 202) and the Beaver Creek road (No. 985).
