Thursday at 3:43 P.M. the Gallatin County 911 Center received a report of a 63-year-old man down on the Hidden Lakes Trail in the Portal Creek area north of Big Sky.  Bruce Halperin, a physician from San Francisco, CA was hiking with his spouse when he collapsed and became unconscious.  Another couple, one of which was a physician from Texas  was hiking the same trail and witnessed Mr. Halperin collapse.  CPR was started but was unsuccessful. With no cellphone service in the area the Texas couple walked out to Big Sky to call 911. Members of Sheriff’s Search & Rescue at Big Sky and a Sheriff’s Deputy Coroner  were able to respond directly to the patient because of GPS coordinates provided by the Texas Doctor.  Mr. Halperin was taken to Bozeman by the Coroner while Search & Rescue members assisted his wife.

The Sheriff would like to remind everyone recreating in the back country that it’s important to have the proper equipment with you to be safe and assist you with returning from your adventures. Always try and venture with others and let family and friends know where you are going and an estimated time of when you will return.
